How to Choose an Anti-Aging Skin Care Product

There are many anti-aging skin care products on the market today. There are several things to know about choosing an anti-aging product that will work for your skin. Here are some things to think about before you go shopping.

Types of Products

You can find many different types of anti-aging skin care products. There are creams, serums, jells, and masks. These can contain green tea extracts, amino acids, peptides and more.

Antiaging skin care products containing collagen or collagen replacing compounds have been found to be most effective in preventing lines and correcting wrinkles long term, because the greatest cause of aging is the loss of natural collagen.

Creams that have firming compounds are also very effective. They tighten the skin, drawing it in, and removing any droopiness.

The loss of Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin E, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Glycolic Acid, and Peptides are othercauses of aging, so it would be smart to look for products that rebuild or resupply these elements.

Vitamin A Derivates

Anyone familiar with anti-aging skin care will no doubt know about using vitamin A derivates, of which Retinol or Retinyl Palmitate are good examples. For stronger anti-aging alternatives you can choose to use Retin A or even Renova vitamin A treatments, although these are only available through prescription and can be very irritating to sensitive skin.

Hydroxy Acids

Another equally effective skin rejuvenation alternative is chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). AHA glycolic acid is very popular and to get best out of it, you need to use it in concentrations of between 8 and 15 percent, depending on your skin sensitivity. It is also a good idea to begin with a low concentration and then more up to higher levels as your skin tolerance grows. Stop as soon as you see the first signs of irritation.

Antioxidants

There is yet another alternative in anti-aging skin care worth trying out and that is to use antioxidants, which help control free radicals that would otherwise damage your skin. Antioxidants can also encourage the repair of your skin. Thus, you could look for products that contain Vitamin C Ester or Spin Trap or even CoQ10, making sure that these ingredients are present in sufficient quantity and quality to penetrate your skin.

Skin Type

It is important to choose anti-aging skin care products that work with your skin type and not against it, to avoid skin irritation, reactions and blemishes. Try to look for anti-aging skin care products that say right on the label what skin type they can be used on. For example, if you have sensitive skin, you should buy products that are made with gentle ingredients and avoid the stronger hydroxy acid products.

Age

Many people think that you don’t need anti-aging skin care products until middle age. This is not true. You want to start preventing aging before it starts. In your twenties you can simply use a gentle moisturizing lotion and sun block. As you progress in age you will want more aggressive products, such as serums for the morning and night. Whatever your age, the most important thing to remember about anti-aging skin care products is to actually use them!
